Under the map

Find the pieces. Plan the pattern.

As each find comes free, set it in a clean spot beside the tray. Sort the shell, tail and starfish beads by shape before choosing an order for the bracelet. Keep the amethyst aside for the necklace.

5 shell beads

Compare their colors and place them along the bracelet string before threading.

4 mermaid tail beads

Turn each tail the way you want it to face. Try alternating tails and shells.

Starfish and amethyst

Choose a place for the starfish in the bead pattern. The amethyst goes in the spiral cage to make a pendant.

Inside the box

From the first scrape to the last clue.

For the dig

For the jewelry

1 bracelet string, 1 necklace cord, 1 spiral cage, 1 ring base and 2 glue dots, plus the treasures to uncover.

For the hunt

Start with the dig

A little at a time.

One block holds the finds for the projects. Kids can pause after digging and come back to the jewelry later; keep every small piece with the guide.

01

Set out the tray

Cover the table and place the block in the included tray. Put the jewelry supplies and cards in a separate clean area.

02

Scrape around a find

Use the chisel to loosen small amounts of material. Work around a visible piece until it is free.

03

Brush and sort

Brush away loose material, including around bead holes. Set the cleaned finds in your dish and compare their shapes.

04

Move to a clean space

Check for small pieces before clearing the tray. Wash hands, then lay out the cords, beads and fittings for the jewelry stage.

Make something to keep

Your finds, ready to wear.

Arrange a bracelet

Lay the shell, tail and starfish beads in a row. Move them around until your child likes the pattern, then follow the guide to thread and secure the bracelet string.

Make an amethyst necklace

Place the amethyst in the spiral cage and assemble it with the necklace cord as directed. An adult can help with the cage and check the closure.

Finish the shell ring

Use the ring base, shell decoration and supplied glue dots according to the guide. Check that the decoration is secure before trying it on.

Younger makers may need help with threading, knots and small fittings. Check the fit of each finished piece; jewelry measurements are not specified.

Then hide the treasure

Ten cards. A trail of clues.

Once the digging is finished, the clue cards give the treasures another job. A parent can set the trail first, then let the child take a turn making clues.

Choose the hiding spots

Read the card prompts and fill in clues for places your child can reach safely. Keep the route in rooms you can supervise.

Lay the trail backward

Put the treasure at the finish, then place the cards so each clue leads to the next. Hand the first card to the player.

Find it, then swap roles

Read clues aloud when needed. Count the pieces after the hunt and let your child choose a new final hiding spot.

Use a clean dish or small container from home to hold tiny finds at a hiding spot. Start with a few cards for a shorter hunt; save the rest for another round.

A project with a next chapter

Dig today. Make tomorrow.

An afternoon together

Let your child handle the sorting and pattern choices while you help with the fiddly knots and fittings. There is no fixed completion time.

A mermaid birthday activity

Wrap the box for a child who likes both digging and making accessories. The finished jewelry gives them something to keep after the block is gone.

A hunt with siblings

Share the digging tools, then take turns reading clues or leading the search. One kit supplies one bracelet, one necklace and one ring; plan how to share them.

Before you begin

Age guidance and small parts.

Ages 6+. Choking hazard: small parts. Not for children under 3. Read the supplied instructions before digging or making jewelry.

Help with tools and fittings

Keep an adult nearby during digging, threading and assembly. Keep beads, glue dots, cords and tools away from younger children.

Keep dust in the tray

Work on a stable, covered table. Keep loose digging material away from the face, avoid blowing dust and wash hands afterward.

Check and store

Check knots, closures and decorations before use. Remove jewelry for sleep and active play. Keep the dry finds, fittings and cards together in a closed container out of reach of younger children.

Questions before opening

A few things parents ask.

What is included for making the jewelry?

The kit includes bracelet string, a necklace cord, a spiral cage, a ring base and two glue dots. Use the recovered beads and amethyst with these fittings, following the supplied guide.

Does the kit include a mermaid doll?

The mermaid theme comes from the tail and ocean beads, artwork and clue cards. A separate mermaid doll is not included. The three finished projects are a bracelet, necklace and shell ring.

What age is it for, and will my child need help?

The recommended age is 6 and up. An adult may need to help with the chisel, threading, knots and jewelry fittings. Younger readers may also need the clues read aloud.

Can we use it more than once?

The block is for one dig. Keep the finished jewelry and reuse the clue cards for new hunts. Glue dots are supplied in a quantity of two; replacements are not included.

Can several children share one kit?

Yes, they can take turns digging and following the clue cards. Each kit has one block, one chisel, one brush and supplies for one bracelet, one necklace and one ring. Use additional kits if each child wants a full jewelry set.

Keep the ideas coming

Pick the next table project.

A dig with jewelry to make has a different finish from a specimen collection or a toy for free play. These guides help you choose what your child will do next.
