Ever wanted to create a little magic in your own kitchen? Crystal Growing – The coolest science activity ever, make shining treasures at home! You’re performing the job of both a scientist and an artist.
Borax powder or Epsom salt
Hot water
Pipe cleaners or string
Popsicle sticks
Food coloring (for colorful crystals)
A clear cup or jar
A paper towel
Before Getting Started: Ask an adult to help you. When you do science experiments, safety is always a concern! Have a clean space to work and your crystals lab supplies ready.
For this experiment, you will need an adult to help you heat water. The water will be hot, but not boiling.
Place the hot water into a transparent cup or jar.
Add borax or Epsom salt to the hot water. Gently stir until completely combined. You want the salt to dissolve in the water.
Add a few drops of food coloring if you want colorful crystals. Watch the color spread!
Use a pipe cleaner and create a loop at one end. Then tie the other end to a popsicle stick.
Dip the pipe cleaner slowly in the water solution The device should not touch the bottom or the sides of the cup or glass.
Allow to rest for a few hours or overnight. Next come the magic part — tiny planting crystals by PPT will start growing!
When your crystal is large and glittery, gently remove it and place it to dry on a paper towel.
You can try creating other shapes such as a heart, star, or even a letter
Add your food coloring to create a rainbow of crystals
Try salt, or sugar — see how the PPT grow your own crystals are different.
Find out from an adult about exploring ranges in temperatures
